Two Real Walks: 1.06 vs 0.40 m/s

Two real walks to scale, and what walking speed and step length mean in older adults.

Two Real Walks: 1.06 vs 0.40 m/s

Two real walks recorded with Step Doctor, three steps each, with the avatar placed where each step landed:

  • Walk A: 1.06 m/s, steps about 63 cm.
  • Walk B: 0.40 m/s, steps 35–50 cm.

In older adults, under 0.6 m/s makes poor health and function more likely, and 1.0 m/s or more goes with longer survival than expected (Studenski et al., 2011). A change of about 0.1 m/s is substantial (Perera et al., 2006).

Two real walks on the app's avatar, three steps each, placed where each step landed: walk A at 1.06 m/s with steps about 63 cm, walk B at 0.40 m/s with steps 35 to 50 cm, both marked on a walking speed scale
Two real walks recorded with Step Doctor, to scale, next to the walking speed thresholds for older adults (Studenski et al., 2011).
